Archway Gallery presents From the Earth, featuring decorative ceramics by Carol Berger, on view April 6 – May 2, 2019.
The artist will be on hand to visit with guests during the exhibition opening reception on Saturday, April 6, from 5 – 8 p.m. at the gallery, and will talk about her work at 6:30 p.m. The artist will also give a demonstration and talk on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at 3:00 p.m.
Carol Berger's artwork is often influenced by images, patterns and colors from nature. As an environmentalist and an avid reuse-recycler, Carol hopes that by creating work which reflects our natural world, others will be encouraged to join her efforts in protecting our earth.
This show is comprised of decorative pieces that include both stoneware and porcelain clay bodies. Many of Berger's works focus on the use of a surface treatment described as "Naked Raku" on the porcelain to obtain the greatest degree of black and white contrast. Larger pieces, such as fountains, are designed in stoneware for durability outdoors. Some pieces are wheel-thrown and others are hand-built with the firing range of anywhere from low fire to Cone 9 depending on the desired finish.
CaroI has always loved to draw and paint; early art experiences included design opportunities and classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She graduated with a double major in Art and Spanish from the College of Wooster (Ohio). During her college years, she attended the University of Madrid focusing on art history with an emphasis on Goya. This gave her the opportunity to study major works of art in France, Italy, and Spain.
After a career as a full-time classroom teacher, Carol Berger relocated to Texas to be near her grandkids. She took a ceramics class the following year which began the fulfillment of her lifelong dream; a second career as a professional working artist.

About Archway Gallery Artist owned and operated since 1976. Archway Gallery, one of Houston's and the nation's oldest artist-owned and operated galleries, is located at 2305 Dunlavy and is open Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 – 5 p.m. Since 1976, Archway Gallery has been exhibiting the work of the area's finest artists, providing a great selection of affordable, high quality art including sculpture, pottery and painting in a variety of media and styles. One of the more than 30 member artists is always on site, providing visitors a unique opportunity to meet the artists who created the work, offering a personal insight into the process. Each month features a special exhibition highlighting member artist(s). The public is invited to the monthly opening receptions that celebrate the new installations and work, usually held the first Saturday of each month from 5 – 8 p.m. In addition to monthly exhibitions, Archway also hosts a variety of demonstrations and monthly readings for local writers and authors, as well as a "Tea and Tour" program, providing visitors with a free artist-led tour of the current exhibition, followed by tea and refreshments.
