"Doesn't everyone love Houston?" ~ Sherry Tseng Hill
Having lived in Houston for most of her life, Sherry Tseng Hill has observed the quiet transformation of the city from a scruffy, sprawling, swamp of a place to a powerhouse of intellect, culture, and diversity. For this show, she weaves her observations, experiences, and stories of the city's past, present, and future presenting them in a collection of wide ranging works that is reflective of this diversity.

In contrast to the fluidity of time in  Sherry Tseng Hill's work, Jim Adams' Sentinels seem timeless and permanent. Fashioned from square and rectangular pieces of steel tube sections, the 11 monolithic pieces articulate a strong and omniscient quality. Each seems solitary and distant, yet all are linked together and connected to one another. They silently stand watch over the transformations of time and our city.

Sherry Tseng Hill was born in Taiwan and lived there until she was a young teenager. She first picked up a paint brush when she was 7 years old, and since then has explored art in a variety of media ranging from calligraphy and oil pastels at an early age to pencils, soft pastels, and oils through college continuing into the early years of her career. She is now experimenting with acrylics and mixed media.

Ms. Hill attended Rice University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Architecture in 1980 and a Bachelor of Architecture in 1982. In addition to her studies in architecture and art history, she also has taken numerous art studio classes. Recently, she studied under a number of award winning watercolor artists through the Watercolor Art Society of Houston's workshops and classes.

Jim Adams' work is largely created from scrapped industry and infrastructure items. This metal was something before it became artwork and there is no attempt to deny that. Adams' sculptures are minimalist and monochromatic having a raw, earthy character that ranges from whimsical spoofs to dramatic abstracts.

The body of work created for this exhibition is a series of pieces known as Sentinels. Their presence is solitary and taciturn; their purpose is never ending vigilance. The sculptures need to be with their brothers but never in close proximity.

In 2007, after 24 years in the Information Technologies field, Adams took up artistry in iron and steel developing his unique and recognizable style. Prior to his years in IT, he worked in the welding industry where he developed the skill and knowledge required for working with metals. Most of his work evolves from the physical characteristics of whatever wonderful piece of steel has been rescued from one dumpster or another. "My approach is to find and create beauty, or thought provoking aspects, from the often unique characteristics of the items found."

Adams' sculptures are exhibited in multiple galleries in North America and has been featured in a number of public exhibitions. His artwork resides in collections across the United States and internationally. Jim Adams has been represented by Archway Gallery since 2011.
