Artist's Statement:

When I first started creating paintings depicting life in and around Houston two years ago I could never have imagined that my solo show would follow a flooding disaster called Harvey.

I was used to thinking that artists needed to go far away from the city to find anything worthy of a painting.  It is human nature to take the immediate surroundings for granted.  My challenge was to find the beauty of what we Houstonians might think of as commonplace.

But Harvey changed all of that.  The whole country watched as floodwater rose to cover the parklands along the bayous that inspired so many of these paintings.  The flood seemed to swallow up the entire city.  Now the water is gone, leaving mountains of destruction.  Mountains of work.

I thought I would inspire an appreciation for the mundane, everyday scenes of Houston.  I didn't know how we might all feel being confronted with the possible loss of these places.
