ARTICLE VI – EXHIBIT
Within the current competition year, exhibit entries must have won a First, Second, Third or First Honorable Mention at their Home Show or in any LSAG Judged Open Show. An LSAG Approved Show shall be any show reporting winners to the LSAG Database for that year. Each LSAG Club must report to the eligible winners within 10 days after each club show. Award winner lists from Club Shows held too late in the current competition year for entry in the Convention will be eligible for the Convention of the following year. Editor's Note:The entire member league would be affected by this timing for reporting results.
An artwork can be entered in LSAG Convention competition one time only!
From LSAG Show Guidelines:
1. ART WORK SUBMISSION:
All artwork is to comply with LSAG Show Guidelines as described below and any further guidelines established by the Member Art League hosting the show. Check each of your entries for its compliance:
- Use ONLY wire hangers (no saw tooth hangers) for hanging all 2-D artwork.
- Art work must have been completed within the last two years.
- Art work must be completely your own original work.
- Each piece of artwork must have a TITLE- “Un-named” or “Un-titled” is not acceptable.
- Please be certain the Entry Size is entered correctly. Dimensions are correctly listed in inches (“) with the width (W) first by height (H) (W”x H”) for 2-D art and depth (D) added (W” x H” x D”) for 3-D work. Also please use the overall framed size (not art work size) for any framed 2-D artwork. An art piece listed as 12” x 36” fits on display panels very differently from a 36” x 12” piece.
- After your entry has been received, the art registration information CAN NOT be revised or
changed. This includes the Title of the Entry and Entry Size. And NO substitutions of artwork can be made. - If registration was done online, ID Tags will be given to you during art intake and entry fees paid at the time of intake to the Art Show Chairperson. (See league's prospectus)
- ID Tags should be placed on both the front and back of the art piece. (See league's prospectus)
- Art work must be appropriate for a family-friendly event. No nudes, gory violence and/or obscene words may be depicted in the art piece or Title of the Entry.
- No 3-D artwork is to be heavier than 25 lbs and sculptural pieces must have a sturdy base.
- Small, delicate and fragile 3-D art (earrings, paper sculpture, etc) must be encased or framed and ready to hang or place on a flat table top or pedestal surface.
- All artwork must fit comfortably through show location doors.
- All art work must be completely dry and ready to hang or display when submitted during intake for the show.
- Exhibiting artwork wider than 36 inches and/or heavier than 3 lbs requires special consideration. A sturdy easel must be provided by the artist for displaying this type of artwork.
- Artwork CAN NOT be removed prior to the closing of show. NO EXCEPTIONS.
- If you are a member of this art league and/or another LSAG member league, your membership dues are to be current before registering for the show to qualify for the specified entry fee.
- Show entry MUST be completed by the show deadline date specified on your league’s prospectus.
2. SELECTING A CATEGORY:
There are ten (10) Art Categories which are generally separated by art types and medium used. The following guidelines were written to assist artists in choosing the appropriate Art Category for their artwork*:
Category A: Oil/Acrylic Painting – oil paintings and acrylic paintings painted like an oil painting
Category B: Watercolor/Acrylic Painting – watercolor and acrylic paintings applied with water giving the appearance of a watercolor painting
Category C: Pastels – including pastels applied over a watercolor under painting
Category D: Drawing – including Sumi-e and oriental brush painting
Category E: Mixed Media – artwork displaying two or more types of media, including but not limited to collage, encaustic painting and other mixed media
Category F: Photography – digital or film photography MINIMALLY manipulated or altered using technology
Category G: Digital Art – all forms of digital art including photography that has been GREATLY manipulated or altered using technology
Category H: Abstract/ Experimental/Non-Objective Art – in any medium
Category I: Sculpture – 3-D forms in various media, including sculptures in relief
Category J: Studio Fine Crafts – original fine crafts created in a studio environment including glass blowing, stained glass, printmaking, porcelain, woodwork, jewelry, mosaic, weaving, fiber art, metal work, and other finely crafted items
*Each artist decides the category to place his or her art work. The advice of the member league’s show chairperson is available upon request. NOTE: The show committee reserves the right to disqualify any artwork NOT entered in the appropriate category or meeting the submission requirements in 1.
3.SELECTING AN ARTIST DIVISION:
There are five (5) Artist Divisions. These Artist Divisions are separated by the following primary skill levels*:
I. Professional – Artist’s choice for this designation
II. Semi-Professional - Artist’s choice to move up
III. Non-Professional - Artist’s choice to move up
IV. Adult Student – Adult who has created art work for less than three years either through self-study or under the direction of an art teacher. The teacher may give any and all verbal assistance needed; however, the teacher MAY NOT PHYSICALLY WORK ON the artwork to be entered in a show. After two (2) years of College Art (4 art courses) or three (3) years as an Adult Student, any LSAG member shall enter the Non-Professional Division.
V. School Student - Any school student, Elementary, Middle or High School.
From LSAG Annual Convention Exhibit Rules:
1. Members must be in good standing with their local LSAG affiliated Club.
2. COPIES of existing art or artwork made by using another artist’s concept and design will not qualify for entering the LSAG convention.
To qualify as an “Original Artwork” it must be the end result of the submitting artist’s ORIGINAL CONCEPT, DESIGN AND EFFORT; i.e., artwork in which only the creating artist physically integrates and/or manipulates every component of his/her original concept & design.
Teachers, friends, critics, etc. may give verbal assistance but may not physically work on the artwork being submitted for competition. Artwork created in, or as the result of a workshop, will only qualify if the workshop adopts your idea (that’s your original concept), and you do the workshop set-up (that’s your effort) using your model (or object) to be painted, sculpted, etc. (that’s your original design). In this case, your finished artwork would qualify for competition in the LSAG; however, no other class member’s personal effort to reproduce a rendition of your original concept and design would qualify!
Photographs, pictures and existing artwork are in the same category as teachers, friends, critics, etc. These resources may be used for reference only.
3. All entries must have won a First, Second, Third Place, or First Honorable Mention at their home show, another LSAG club show or other judge’s critique. If the Convention entries are becoming too numerous, and the size of the show must be reduced, then the host club(s) may limit entries to First, Second, and Third Place. Once an artwork has won a First place ribbon or Best of Show/Floral in an LSAG Show during the year, it is eligible for the LSAG Convention. It may not be entered in another LSAG Club Show.
4. All entries must be winners since the last LSAG Convention. At the time of receiving a member club award, the entry must have been completed within the prior twenty-four months.
5. All hang-able artwork must be ready to hang complete with wire or be submitted in such a manner that it can be handled by the “hanging committee”. If any piece of artwork is extremely large, heavy, or particularly fragile, then special arrangements must be made with the “hanging committee” for its display. ENTRIES ARE ENTERED AT OWNER’S OWN RISK, although every precaution will be taken in handling.
6. The following information must be placed on the back or under artworks: name, address, cell phone number, price (or NFS), medium, Artist Division and Art Category. The signature or name on your artwork will be covered for judging.
7. The hosting club(s) will set up registration and exhibition fees. A registration fee will be charged to each person attending the Convention and an exhibition fee will be charged for each artwork that you submit.
If you enter your artwork in the Convention Exhibit and do not personally attend, then you may or may not be charged a registration fee. This is at the discretion of the Convention Steering Committee and will be made clear on the registration form you receive prior to the convention.
8. The following Ribbon Awards will be made in each Artist Division and Art Category if appropriate. The host club may give other awards at their discretion. A SINGLE WORK OF ART MAY RECEIVE NO MORE THAN TWO AWARDS (at the convention).BEST OF SHOW

PROFESSIONAL - artist’s choice for this designation
SEMI-PROFESSIONAL - artist’s choice to move up
NON-PROFESSIONAL - artist’s choice to move up
ADULT STUDENT - one who has painted, sculpted, etc., for less than three years (self-study) or under the direction of a teacher. The teacher may give any and all verbal assistance needed; however, the teacher MAY NOT PHYSICALLY WORK ON the artwork to be entered in a show. After two (2) years of College Art (4 art courses) or three (3) years as an Adult Student, any LSAG member will automatically be placed in the Non-Professional Division.
SCHOOL STUDENT - Any school student, grades K-12 who has retained a student standing. When school
competition is heavy, then this Artist Division should be divided as follows:
Elementary (grades K-5)
Middle School (grades 6-8)
High School (grades 9-12)
Once an artist is established in one of the five (5) Artist Divisions, that artist may move up in Artist Divisions, but may never move down regardless of any new art mediums worked in/or submitted. An artist should show in the same Artist Division the entire LSAG year. If an artist does enter in a particular division earlier in the year and then, later in the year, enters shows in a higher division, then the artist should enter ALL of his or her artwork, for later LSAG league shows or convention registration, in the higher division.
10. The following guidelines were written to assist artists in choosing an Art Category for their artwork:
Category A: Oil/Acrylic- oil paintings and acrylic paintings applied like an oil painting.
Category B: Watercolor/Acrylic- watercolor paintings and acrylic paintings applied with water giving the appearance of a watercolor painting.
Category C: Pastels- including pastels applied over a watercolor under painting.
Category D: Drawing- including sumi-e and oriental brush painting.
Category E: Mixed Media- artwork displaying two or more types of media, including but not limited to collage, encaustic painting and other mixed media.
Category F: Photography-digital or film photography minimally manipulated or altered using technology.
Category G: Digital Art- all forms of digital art including photography that has been greatly manipulated or altered using technology.
Category H: Abstract/Experimental/Non-Objective
Category I: Sculpture– 3-D forms in various media, including sculptures in relief. Note: If a clay structure has been bronzed since the local club award then the bronze sculpture is acceptable at convention.
Category J: Studio Fine Crafts– original fine crafts created in a studio environment such as glass blowing, stained glass, printmaking, pottery, porcelain, woodwork, jewelry, mosaic, weaving, fiber art, metal work, and other fine hand-crafted items.
Note on Category Choice: Each artist decides in which category to place his or her work, with the advice of the member league’s show chairman when needed, unless all work is juried into the league’s LSAG show.
Note: In the event of an unusually large show, a member art league may further break down Art Categories. HOWEVER, the eligible entries must be placed back in the above Art Categories for the Lone Star Art Guild Convention Show.
STATEMENT: THE OFFICERS OF EACH LONE STAR ART GUILD (LSAG) AFFILIATED ART CLUB SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE TO SEE THAT THEIR MEMBERS COMPETE IN THE PROPER ARTIST DIVISION AND ART CATEGORIES.
11. Removal of artwork from the Convention Exhibit before the deadline time will disqualify the artist from LSAG Convention for one (1) year.
