Archway Gallery presents Deep Space Communication,  featuring recent paintings and prints by Kevin Cromwell, on view October 6 – November 1, 2018.

The artist will be at the opening reception to visit with guests on Saturday, October 6, from 5 – 8 p.m., and will discuss his work in a talk at 6:30 p.m. He will be giving an additional talk on Sunday, October 14. The talk will include exploration of source text and images for the show. The artist will print a new original work during the talk, and he will discuss the impact of printmaking on his work.
With a sketchbook and something to drink, Kevin Cromwell ponders on ideas of space, connection, and communication. The artist has always been interested in space and has been recording the experience of travel through that dark sea on this blue-green planet. Without access to a celestial bathysphere dropped into the depths, he restricts his records to views of pin-pricked surface and the planet. He hopes that one day we will be able to communicate with others in the greater community and, like all explorers, he tries to cultivate a love of mystery and an openness to the unknown. This is counter to the belief that we have all the knowledge, and that we should automatically define and bind all things.

As a child, Kevin could walk out his front door at night and look up to see the Milky Way crossing the sky. Viewing that wonderous sight in the nighttime sky is no longer possible for many. We have sacrificed our connection to the greater universe in order to illuminate and define the shadows around us. This loss of connection and mystery forms the tapestry wherein Kevin pins the record of his current work.

Archway Gallery: Able's Transparent Opens Sept. 1 / Reception Sept. 8

Archway Gallery presents Transparent,  featuring recent collages and paintings by Barbara Able, on view September 1 – October 4, 2018.

The artist will be at the opening reception to visit with guests on Saturday, September 8, from 5 – 8 p.m., and will discuss her work in a talk at 6:30 p.m.

Able's new body of work, Transparent, is a series of paintings and collages that utilizes transparency in various ways. Her new collages were inspired by Robert Rauschenberg "combine" paintings. Rauschenberg created the term to describe works of art in which he "combined" various objects on the surface, creating a hybrid of painting and sculpture. The hybrid motifs that Able uses include photographic images, patterned papers, and fragments of watercolors. These are layered on the surface and then overlaid with transparent film containing additional images that reflect on the surface below. Able's photographic images include portraits of Raschenberg and Marilyn Monroe, as well as characters painted by Vincent Van Gogh.

Able's landscape and figurative paintings are created using transparent layers of color. She uses a wash technique that results in a semi-transparent, air-brushed background upon which she applies images with brushstrokes of rich color. The landscapes range in subject matter from the gardens of Versailles to Degas images seen at the Denver Art Museum to various Houston locales. Able's figurative paintings depict Degas's bronze scultures of ballerinas and reflections of museum attendees.

According to Able, Tranparent was also inspired by a childhood fascination with her grandmother's stereoscope. A stereoscope is a device created in the mid-twentieth century that allows simultaneous viewing of two photographs of the same scene taken at slightly different angles, creating the illusion of depth. Able, who was already painting and drawing at a young age, was fascinated by the mystery of a flat image being transformed into a three-dimensional one. Her recent collages and paintings emphasize depth and three-dimensionality.

This is Able's third one-person show at Archway Gallery, where she has been a member since 2013. She has a B.F.A. in studio art from the University of Texas and has done post-graduate studies at Art League Houston and privately with nationally known artists.

Selected juror, Diane Griffin Gregory, commented, “Houston is a creative community and this show is every bit a reflection of that.”  She continued, “I hope gallery visitors will enjoy the show’s whimsy, sculptures, landscapes, and the many forms of creativity on display, which I felt were an overwhelming reflection of all of the collection,” said Griffin.

Archway Gallery began its juried exhibition series in 2009 to broaden opportunities for artists and to support local nonprofit organizations, donating 50% of the proceeds to a community partner.  This year the gallery is partnering with Rescue Bank, a Signature Program of GreaterGood.org, which collects and delivers donated pet food and supplies to the animal rescue community through its regional affiliates. There are no formal pet food banks for families in the Houston area.  Rescue Bank, through its mission, has delivered more than 250 million meals to pets since 2011.  Donations are needed to help area organizations maintain an emergency supply of pet food in advance of hurricane season. Starting July 17, Archway Gallery will also host a pet food drive and is seeking donations of pet food through July 28.  Donations can be dropped off at the gallery during normal business hours, Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.  To see a list of needs visit @archwaygallery on Facebook.

It expanded nationally in 2011, supported by generous donations from GreaterGood.org and TheAnimalRescueSite.com. Rescue Bank now distributes grants through a network of non-profit affiliates, partners that manage regional warehouses. Rescue Bank merged with GreaterGood.org in 2014, creating additional grant opportunities for its recipients. Since its national expansion, Rescue Bank has managed more than 2,200 shipments of donated food and litter, delivering more than 250 million meals to pets in need. (www.rescuebank.org)

Archway Gallery presents Dwellings featuring new paintings by Silvia PintoSouza on view June 2 through July 3, 2018.
The artist will be on hand to visit with guests during the exhibition opening reception on Saturday,
June 2 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the gallery and will talk about her work at 6:30 p.m.
Through the centuries, each civilization has typically had different types of dwellings developed by society of the time. Vitruvius, a 1st century Roman architect, described the three qualities required of architecture in his treatise,
De architectura as being: Firmness, Usefulness, and Delight; these include aesthetic, sensual, and intellectual qualities. Silvia PintoSouza explains, "No matter where I go, I recognize these architectural qualities and when viewing dwellings from afar, I feel invited to imagine what goes on in these spaces… What kind of people are behind those doors and windows? What type of life they are living? How do they feel and what are their thoughts about life? Clusters of buildings bear a remarkable testimony; they are buzzing with life…. We can imagine that everyone inside has a sense of belonging both to the city and to the dwelling that shelters them. Each one of these structures has many stories to tell. Their walls touch but they hide so many separate intimate activities of their inhabitants. The buildings are alive; they resemble their occupants and their cultural values… Some are colorful and light in design while others are simply white-washed; and then there are some which are soberly built in stone. There is so much activity enclosed in those walls; all the years of continuous settlement and successive interventions have each left their imprints. They tell me from every corner, 'Life is happening here!'"
PintoSouza is a painter for whom artistic aesthetics is very important. She feels that much of our cultural life is visual and the aesthetic appreciation of art is a major part of it. "When I look at something that I find striking and beautiful, I feel the need to paint it. I start by creating in my mind a pre-image: I look at the shapes, the colors, the light, the shadows and I create the painting in my mind. I want to produce something of aesthetic value, a work of art  that I would enjoy looking at." The artist feels that in today's art world the 'Art for the sake of Art' idea has given way to an art that essentially refers to a political or social issue. She continues, "Of course, there is room for all concepts; we all have different ideas we want to express in different ways, but I feel that the aesthetic side of the work seems to have become secondary and of a lesser importance." We are reminded that Fernando Botero, a world famous Colombian artist, once said, ''The true objective in art is the pursuit of happiness, but the world seems to have forgotten about it." Silvia PintoSouza totally agrees with this statement and comments, "Happiness is also beauty. Since the aesthetic element in art is very important to me as an artist, I spend days working on a painting trying to accomplish what is beautiful or pleasing as seen through my eyes." While she spends time on the composition, color scheme, and textural aspects, ultimately, the important thing to the artist is that when a work of art leaves her studio, she has to be in love with it; it has to give her happiness. She paints what impacts her visual senses and says, "I want my work to speak for me with simplicity. There is no need for pompous words or descriptions that take away from what I feel is the real purpose of art… Finding pleasure in viewing art is what I call happiness!"

After graduating with a degree in Architectural Drawing, Silvia PintoSouza traveled from Colombia to London where she pursued her art training and received her Art and Design diploma from Byam Shaw School of Fine Art and Design, now known as Central Saint Martin's School of Art. She then took a course on Photo Printing at the Slade School of Art at University College London where she met her husband Marco. She moved with him to Rio de Janeiro, his native land, and there she continued her training in metal printing, lithography, woodcut, and silkscreen. For the last 25 years she has lived in Houston and has devoted herself exclusively to painting. Throughout her career, Silvia has received several awards and honors from various institutions and has exhibited artwork in many solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe, and South America; her artwork is included in collections throughout the world. She joined Archway Gallery in May 2016 and has enjoyed the comradery and creative environment of this unique gallery.
