Archway Gallery presents Deep Space Communication, featuring recent paintings and prints by Kevin Cromwell, on view October 6 – November 1, 2018.
The artist will be at the opening reception to visit with guests on Saturday, October 6, from 5 – 8 p.m., and will discuss his work in a talk at 6:30 p.m. He will be giving an additional talk on Sunday, October 14. The talk will include exploration of source text and images for the show. The artist will print a new original work during the talk, and he will discuss the impact of printmaking on his work.
With a sketchbook and something to drink, Kevin Cromwell ponders on ideas of space, connection, and communication. The artist has always been interested in space and has been recording the experience of travel through that dark sea on this blue-green planet. Without access to a celestial bathysphere dropped into the depths, he restricts his records to views of pin-pricked surface and the planet. He hopes that one day we will be able to communicate with others in the greater community and, like all explorers, he tries to cultivate a love of mystery and an openness to the unknown. This is counter to the belief that we have all the knowledge, and that we should automatically define and bind all things.
As a child, Kevin could walk out his front door at night and look up to see the Milky Way crossing the sky. Viewing that wonderous sight in the nighttime sky is no longer possible for many. We have sacrificed our connection to the greater universe in order to illuminate and define the shadows around us. This loss of connection and mystery forms the tapestry wherein Kevin pins the record of his current work.
ABOUT ARCHWAY GALLERY Artist owned and operated since 1976. Archway Gallery, one of Houston's and the nation's oldest artist-owned and operated galleries, is located at 2305 Dunlavy and is open Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 – 5 p.m. Since 1976, Archway Gallery has been exhibiting the work of the area's finest artists, providing a great selection of affordable, high quality art including sculpture, pottery and painting in a variety of media and styles. The public is invited to the monthly opening receptions that celebrate the new installations and work, usually held the first Saturday of each month from 5 – 8 p.m. In addition to monthly exhibitions, Archway also hosts a variety of demonstrations and monthly readings for local writers and authors, as well as a "Tea and Tour" program, providing visitors with a free artist-led tour of the current exhibition, followed by tea and refreshments.
